Why Kodaly?
The Kodály method is based on the music education philosophy of the composer, Zoltán Kodály. The key elements of his philosophy include: singing/using our voices, folk songs, Solfège, using quality music, qualified teachers and sequence. Voice is the most natural instrument, and training it develops a musical inner ear that is essential to any musical development including learning another instrument. The main material used in a Kodály music class is folk songs. Folk songs have not only been written by people and sung by children for centuries but also have all the basic characteristics needed to teach the foundations of music and to develop a love for music. The moveable "Do" system (Solfège), highly developed in English choral training, was advocated by Kodály as a tool for teaching musical literacy and for developing the musical inner ear. By using quality music in a well sequenced curriculum, we can grow children into true music lovers. Teachers who teach with the Kodály method also strive to be the best musicians themselves so that they may provide the best education to the children they teach.
